The Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University, is a modern research and teaching unit active in biochemistry and biotechnology. It is one of the faculty's oldest disciplines – the first biochemistry institute was founded in 1950, an independent department in 1962, and the current department in 2006.

Today, the department consists of eleven research teams that contribute to teaching and the scientific training of students at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Our aim is to give students solid theoretical foundations and methodological skills, preparing them for careers in research, development and diagnostic laboratories.

Biochemistry studies life at the level of molecules – their structure, function and interactions. It seeks answers to questions about cellular regulation, protein function, and the intersection of chemistry with biology and medicine. Our research focuses on the molecular physiology and pathology of animals and plants, environmental microbiology, glycobiochemistry, and the development of new bioanalytical approaches.

Beyond standard funding, the department participates in a range of grant projects that help deliver high-quality results in both teaching and research.
